One of the most exciting new voices to emerge in Australian cinema in the past few years, North Macedonian-born, Melbourne-based writer/director Goran Stolevski is as prolific as he is original and idiosyncratic. His latest effort, HOUSEKEEPING FOR BEGINNERS, is Stolevski’s third feature film in two years, following his menacing, Noomi Rapace-starring debut YOU WON’T BE ALONE and last year’s intense romance OF AN AGE.
Winner of The Queer Lion at The Venice Film Festival and North Macedonia’s Official Selection for Best International Feature at the 96th Academy Awards, HOUSEKEEPING FOR BEGINNERS boasts Stolevski’s punchy, powerful brand of observational storytelling, and tellingly portrays the realism of queer life in North Macedonia.
In a free-spirited household where people come and go, Dita (Anamaria Marinca) finds herself raising her girlfriend’s two daughters: quirky and hilarious Mia, and the rebellious teen Vanessa. With incredible empathy for and understanding of its characters, HOUSEKEEPING FOR BEGINNERS delves into the universal truths of family, exploring both the bonds we inherit and those we create.
“Goran Stolevski’s handling of the balance between jostling high spirits and the creeping dread of loss is supremely confident; his storytelling is fresh, authentic and genuinely exciting.” —— Wendy Ide | SCREEN DAILY
